Lock Down Hobby Time #1 Road Bases in 10 easy steps!

Image
So during lock down, I have been able to get some painting time. Through the miracle of not commuting 2 hours a day and nap time for my children, I can get a good 1 -3 hours a day about 4 days a week to paint and hobby. I have finished up painting most of the Speed Freeks, or at least the ones I use in games on the regular, so when it came time to base them I wanted to base them the same as my bikers: Cork, dashed road lines, and nothing fancy. So I started with the stencil I’d use to make the dashed lines. The biker bases I free handed the lines, and that was a pain being about 5 minutes per base, it took too long. Also, I got some lines messed up and dashes that were unequal in size. Using a stencil was the best bet. I had never made one before but I saw some guy on FB make one using tape, so I did that. I started with the straight lines. I went a tad bit wider that I though because I figured cutting would not be exact. I also opted for a diagonal line for the dashes as I wo...

Four out of Five Games (continued)

So after two losses and seven hours of games, I was a bit weary and a little punchy, but not in the violent way, just the little bit silly way. It was pretty hot and I had my share of leaning new rules about my enemies, so when I saw Danny and his chaos knights it was almost a relief. While I hadn't played against knights of the chaos nature, I knew they were less than the imperial knights over all, and I knew imperial knights. Yup, that was his army. His army was pretty small. It was three knights, and greater demon, and herald of Khorne, a bloodletter bomb and some nurglings. His drops were small and he went first, and took out my flyers. I positioned myself to attack second turn when my deep strikers will come in and shot the knights a bunch with the Shokk Attack Guns (SAG). They worked all right this turn. In his second turn, he dropped his bomb, and charged my regular shokk attack mek and my mob of 30 boys. Needless to say, I am not longer afraid of bloodletters. He did e...

Four out of Five games...

...were lost and a bye given at the end. This past weekend was the Hammer of Wrath Tournament at Game Empire in Pasadena. It looked like this when I walked in. I am pretty sure that guy is wearing a shirt... The space was great and I was excited, until I saw my first opponent which looked like this: Yeah, that's right. My first ever tournament and I play repulsor spam! With Bobby G. A Primarch. The owner of this army was Sean and probably one of the coolest cats I played. He was methodical and precise in his actions and rolling. He even had little pieces of paper that showed me where each gun was shooting: This was very helpful Sean! I thanked him many times on explaining what he was doing. I am not sure if you know this, but repulsors have like 100 shots each depending the load out. Not good for my Orks at all. I pretty much go shot off the board. One of the coolest thing for Sean (not me, but still really cool) was Bobby G. needed a 12 charge to prevent fr...

Battle Report: Khorne Killers

Image
Ok, so I played an impromptu game that was planned on Thursday, set up on Friday, 'cause we had the time, and played on Saturday afternoon. As it was played in the garage that is unfinished (common in Southern California)so there is no insulation nor air conditioning: the 95 degree weather was the third opponent. Heat aside, I was able to pull of another win. yay. My buddy King used a strange list that included 4 squads of terminators for a total of 22 of them. The set up: We played full ITC mission Seize Ground with secondaries. I picked Marked for death, and chose his termie squads, Recon, and Behind Enemy Lines. He chose Reaper (smart), engineers (gutsy) and Old School (easy). I actually deployed faster, so when both rolled 3's for 1st turn decision having that plus one allowed me to choose first turn. Turn one: His set up was lopsided so I focused on the weaker side for easy kills. The deployed shokk attack and battle wagon did some damage on a berserker squad wipi...

The road to the first tournament...

This is it. This is all I have left. 11 miniatures. Really, 10 nobs and a grot oiler. That is all I have left to paint for the tournament.  I feel pretty accomplished with this, but not as much as I thought I would. This is a bit discouraging, but not much. I thought I'd feel better, and I am not sure why. Maybe it is that I know I still have more to paint. Maybe it is that I have painted to a level that is six check marks on the ITC Hobby Track Painting Rubric, and no display board. I just saw that rubric last week and it is a bit discouraging to not be at least half the standard. Especially with the amount of work I've put in. I'd like to see something that says,"If there is more that 40 models, if there is more than 80 models, if there is more than 120 models..." I'd make the argument that having a bigger army fully painted is harder that a smaller one. Nids, IG, Orks should automatically get more points! This is pretty good that this much painted, 125...

Four Weeks: 44 models

Image
Ok, so I found another tournament to play in. It is closer and cheaper, so that is a win. I figured out my tourney army, but still need to play it more. The tournament is full ITC load out, including a chess clock set up. it is the The tournament list. 44 models, 4 weeks Things I am worried about: 1. Getting my army painted. This is a dozy as my army is approaching 125 models. 2. Transporting my army. Since I have games at my house, I don't move them much, so I am not used to it. 3. Chess clock. I am lucky if I can get a game done in less that four hours, much less three, and I am usually not very lucky. First, I have the summer off and I am trying to paint about five days a week. I am actually getting in to it a bit. I try to do the drudgery work, like painting shoota and storm boys with the fun stuff like painting the battle wagons or the jets. Also, I am trying out new stuff with the airbrush. For the storm boys I primed black, did a zenithal with white, then spra...
