Blog On the eve of battle, and considerations of past battles

The last few weeks have been a bit crazy with work schedules. As much, it takes away from gaming and hobby time. However, I did find time to get a game of kill team in and paint 10 boyz.

4v4 Kill Team
I was able to convince my old time 40k player friends to play a game of Kill Team with my and my regular player buddy. We ended up playing a 4v4 (I was thinking of doing 2 2v2 games) where I played Orks, Matrix played Death Watch (for the first time), Jeep played Gray Knights, and King played Tau. Jeep ended up winning, I came in 2nd, King 3rd, and Matrix 4th. It all depended on the terrain. Matrix was in a horrible location, Jeep was in a great one. I ended up dividing up my fire between Matrix and King, which allowed Jeep to not lose a single model the whole game. Also, I did not know Gray nights have psychic powers and that killed my leader first turn.

For my list I played it the same as last time. I was thinking of taking out the spanners with KMB, but I decided to keep them since I was playing 2 power armored players. The KMB's did nothing. The Loota's were great! my leader died turn one. My 42 point boss nob was going to get into combat, but the game ended by the time he got there.

The eve of battle

Not playing a real 40k game in a month, I am playing one on Friday. At the time of writing this, it is Friday morning. I will be playing a Knight Killa list with lootas, tank bustas, and 3 battlewagons, but Matrix is playing no knights, but 3 dreads and some silly Death Watch Marines. There is something about intercessors and teleport beaons, I don't know...

Full-ish battle report later this weekend.

Ok, now it is Sunday morning and I’ve had a day to reflect. The game Friday night was fun. I set a few goals for myself, like keeping track of time and to what happened to the game. That went right out the window after a couple of beers. But I did get some data to look at.

1.       Orks can have a great shooty army.
2.       Grots are more valuable than their point cost
3.       Watch your objectives

First, I was playing my buddy that played Death Watch and Imperial Guard (yeah I know they are Astra Militarum, but I know them as IG) and I knew he had a ton of nasty overwatch stuff. So, I figured I would let him charge me. Which he never really did, which is fine as I was able to get some good shots on him all game long. I was able to take out an Intercessor squad, three IG squads, and two dreadnaughts with gun fire alone. WAAAhhhhhgggg.

Next, Grots are great. I used them skillfully to fill in the back line so there were no teleporting dreads behind me. They also screened well. Since I screened so well, my buddy was shooting them instead of what they were screening. He didn’t kill a mob all game. Lastly, they are good objective holders.

Lastly, I was all over the objectives all game, or so I thought. We went to add up points at the end, and I found I was off the objective. I had moved grots back to cover a screen (see above) and was off the objective.

About the game

There were some things I should have done better, and some things I did great. For the things to do better: screen my lootas. I was too concerned about not moving them for the heavy weapon effect, that I left them to be shot, which is fine, but I did not screen with grots. I lost them first turn, and a lot of potential killing along with them. Another thing I could have done better is mentioned above, pay attention to the objectives. Things I did well was shoot. Dakka Dakka worked well seemingly all the time. The Shokk Attack Guns were firing well, I even got some str 10 shots in. The teleyporta battlewagon full of tankbustas, big mek with Kustom Force Field, Warboss and my weird boy was dead killy. Lastly, I love the Wazoom Blasta Jet. The KFF on it helps my army stay alive. I was using that to cover the battlewagons as they advanced. Thinking of maybe getting 2 of them.
I ended up losing the game 16-11. The five point difference was he had the superior objective and he slayed my warlord. I could go on “what ifs” all I want, but he just killed more than me and had more objectives.
The battle field.
