First for the year,.. a bit overwhelmed
As I start this blog anew, with the focus on 40k, I am a bit overwhelmed. There is a new, great codex for my favorite army: Orks. All of it looks good. I figure I have aver 4,000 points in Orks, with just about every data card represented. I played a quick game against a buddy to show him 8th edition and he is hooked, again. I won that game, possibly the first ever for my Orks. The next game he played a brand new knight army and I was squished, but more about that in a bit. The feeling I have being overwhelmed by the game, the hobby aspect, and time management.
There are so many parts to 8th edition that I don't get yet. I need to play more to get them, and against different people. I have always played in my own bubble of friends, and it was fun, but if I want to play and be competitive in a tournament, I need to expand out a bit. With Orks being so new I am riding the wave of not knowing what's best yet. So there is a curve there that again, will just take games played to help figure out.
As for hobby aspect, I have a bunch of stuff to paint. When I was on family leave for the birth of my second son, I put together and painted the shokk jump dragster. There are little touches I need to finish, but they are table top quality. Having only about 5% of my Orks painted, it is a bit of a challenge and daunting task. Also, I need to start over on my scenery. I have some, but If I am going to be playing Knights all the time, I'll have to get some stuff that blocks line of sight.
As for time management, that is a struggle. I have given myself at least an hour a week on hobby time. Anything more I will neglect more important things. However, if I have small bits of time here and there, I will use it. In the 3rd/4th edition days, I would devote weekends and full days off from work to hobbying, but I really don't want to do that anymore.
So there are desires and things I value which include the game, so there is a bit of conflict in doing things that I like and other responsibilities. There needs to be a value balance. I don't think it is out of balance now, but if could be.
As for the game I played; it was a bit disappointing and I beat myself up over losing. I had a great army, with lots of stuff I never played.The list is at the end of the page. The goal was to rush in and get to hand to hand as quick as possible. but I did not get first turn so that put a damper on things. Also we played the short board edge, so it took me longer to get to to him. It was a new army to play and it was a new army I played against. He had a bit beardy Knight list. I did not know what to expect, so I just kinda played as normal. But thats the thing I don't have a normal yet, it have been so long since I played.
I was excited about the list, as I was taking the Vigilus formations: Dread Whaaagh, blitz brigade, and Kult of Speed. I was disappointed by the Shiney Gubbins Shokk attack gun, as it is still a bit too random to rely on. I think it is better to have 2 than a single one. It did do 10 wounds on a Castellan in one shot, but that was about it. I wanted to get the Kult of Speed warlord trait (WT), so I spent the CP on that, but come to find out, he is a bit weak in combat against Knights. I am thinking of the WT Bigkilla boss and the killa claw shiney gubbins on warboss, but I'd loos the speed. I could go Index with a warboss on a bike... there are many better ways I would go against Knights. The biggest part of the loss was time. I knew if I had more time to figure out the army and play it I would be better. I can usually name a MVP for the game, but in this case I am not really sure which is kinda sad.

There are so many parts to 8th edition that I don't get yet. I need to play more to get them, and against different people.
